How does sound help us understand our world?
Celebrating the collective spirit of Sound Artist Miyu Hosoi! Thank you for the chance to participate in a tiny way in this important work.
Observatory Station is part of a new immersive exhibition, Feel the Sound, at the Barbican Centre, London.
Thanks to Cities and Memory and Sound Artist Miyu Hosoi, a recording I made while conducting acoustic research beneath sea ice at 90° N (the North Pole) in 2024 is included in the Observatory Station installation.

Through my minute contribution to a magnificent collaborative installation, I hope to draw more attention to the Arctic, even if just for a moment.
Sea ice extent has decreased in all months and in almost all regions of the Arctic, opening channels for more vessels to navigate the Arctic Ocean. Noise caused by ships is increasing as sea ice melts, impacting Arctic marine mammals as their rapidly contracting habitat fills with unfamiliar anthropogenic noise.
The challenges Arctic marine mammals face are immense as their Arctic Ocean habitat quickly transforms.
